AT&T announced this week that it was selected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to modernize its data communications platform. The contract is a 12-year agreement valued at $725 million.
“It is a special honor to win the opportunity to help VA modernize its mission in the service of our many heroes,” said Chris Smith, Vice President-Civilian and Shared Services, AT&T Public Sector and FirstNet. “We’re thrilled to complement our broad array of AT&T programs that benefit veterans with an advanced data communications platform and capabilities that will power VA’s mission for years to come.”
The data network will serve as a foundation for innovative VA technology capabilities to drive urban and rural mission outcomes. The VA manages America’s largest integrated healthcare system, including 1,255 health care facilities and serves 9 million enrolled Veterans annually. The data network will offer health care and benefits to approximately 18 million veterans and their families; reach visitors at 142 national cemeteries and shrines; and support national preparedness for war, terrorism, national emergencies, and natural disasters.
AT&T says it will transform the VA’s current IP-based data network into a cloud option that’s secure, scalable, highly available, and technology resistant. Advanced capabilities will include Wide Area Networking, Virtual Private Networking, and Managed Network services, enabling VA care providers to access patient records in real-time.
