The Port of Oakland, CA is getting a private LTE network using Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), one of the first ports to use this solution in the U.S., reported Container Management. Geoverse will provide the private network for Oakland Maritime Support Services (OMSS), a truck and container parking facility located at the port.
The CBRS deployment at the port is expected to be a model for other locations around the US, according to Geoverse CEO Rod Nelson. “This deployment is proving to be a first for the support of new use cases with CBRS, demonstrating how these networks are really a good fit for these maritime environments,” he added.
In phase one of the project, OMSS is deploying the control element Geoverse GeoCore Evolved Packet Core (EPC) to manage the CBRS network infrastructure and the connected endpoints across the port, according to Container Management. OMSS mobile devices and end points will use Geoverse SIM cards, enabling secure connections to the private network.
Moving forward, OMSS plans to further accelerate its digital transformation with Geoverse by enabling sitewide wireless coverage, Industrial IoT, and advanced analytics to make its container yard operation more productive and efficient. According to Bill Aboudi, president of OMSS, “By partnering with Geoverse, the OMSS will be able to enhance its existing infrastructure to support the emerging demands through the use of intelligent intermodal applications such as container yard workflow analytics, environmental monitoring, smart gate management, and drone surveillance.”
OMSS hopes the solution will also improve safety and security plus communication services along with reducing operational costs. Sustainability is also a key outcome the company aims to achieve.
