As Fiscal Year 2022 unfurls, the FirstNet Authority reports it will have a budget of $253 million to continue its mission to support public safety communications. Employing a three-pronged approach, the agency has declared its intention to continue to deploy resources for the nationwide public safety broadband network, engage with the public to determine their communications priorities, and manage network investments based on feedback from public safety personnel.

“FirstNet is the only network with a dedicated organization like the FirstNet Authority providing oversight of the network and ensuring public safety’s voice continues to drive the future of the network,” stated FirstNet Authority CEO Edward Parkinson. “This streamlined budget allows us to continue important work, while also ensuring we are good stewards of our funds on behalf of public safety. FirstNet is truly public safety’s network, and we are proud to serve them as they work to keep communities safe.”

Last year, the FirstNet Authority focused on upgrading to 5G delivery in numerous markets. It also expanded its deployable fleet, enabling both temporary and emergency connectivity in compromised areas. FirstNet has continued to work with AT&T, which worked to grow its 5G presence in the consumer market.

“This budget secures the organization’s ability to plan and invest in future capabilities and services that will continue to evolve the network,” said FirstNet Authority Board Chair, Tip Osterthaler. “The FirstNet Authority remains steadfast in its mission to ensure FirstNet delivers what public safety asked for and needs – today and in the future.”
