Greek carrier Cyta announced this week that with the completion of its final network buildout, Cyprus has become the first in the European Union country to have 100 percent of its population covered by 5G service.

On Monday, May 2, 2022, the President and residents of Sykopetra Pitsilia hosted an event in their village to recognize the operation of the last antenna in the network. The nation’s Deputy Minister, Kyriakos Kokkinos, recognizing Cyta’s key role in the digital transition of the country and its economy, said that, “The immediate availability of networks and services in every corner of Cyprus contributes to the enhancement of the digital maturity of the country and its citizens and thus to the strengthening of the resilience of its economy.”

The Commissioner of Cyprus, Costas Champiaouris, said an important factor in achieving country-wide coverage was Cyta’s policy of offering cutting-edge technologies even in areas that are considered to be mountainous and remote.

“Cyta is one of the pillars of the effort to implement a basic direction of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities concerning the promotion of the digital transition,” Champiaouris said, “the effective creation of infrastructure and the development of services, aiming at the modernization of mountainous areas and the improvement of technological accessibility, both for residents and businesses.”

The President of the Community of Sykopetra thanked Cyta for not forgetting the mountain communities and noted that technology is a basic prerequisite for the area to be able to continue to grow and progress.

Cyta CEO Andreas Neocleous stated: “Growth is for everyone, no one is left behind. Technology and its benefits reach the whole of Cyprus, even in its most remote areas, proving that for Cyta actions speak louder than words.”
