Open Fiber, TIM and FiberCop have signed a commercial agreement that allows the reuse of network infrastructures in the so-called white areas, where the construction of infrastructure has been financed with public funds. The agreement, according to the companies, inaugurated a new phase of relations between the main Italian infrastructure operators and aims at a more efficient use of resources, with a view to accelerating the country’s coverage with VHCN (Very High Capacity Network) networks.
In the white areas – where Open Fiber has been awarded the three public tenders announced by Infratel – the agreement provides that Open Fiber purchases from FiberCop, for a total value of more than $209 million, the indefeasible right of use (IRU) for air infrastructure and access connections to the customer’s home. At the same time, TIM is committed to making Open Fiber optical fiber available to its customers in white areas. This arrangement will reportedly activate at least 500 thousand customers on the Open Fiber network.
This agreement will also allow Open Fiber to significantly accelerate the phases of network construction and activation of connections in white areas, in line with the objectives of the industrial plan approved last December, which reserves a significant part of the available resources for concession areas. More efficiency in the use of infrastructure and the work factor means not only accelerating the country’s wiring where already planned, but also freeing up resources to be allocated to the further development plans, according to Mario Rossetti, CEO and General Manager of Open Fiber.
