Nokia and LS Electric, a South Korea-based smart power system and automation company, have teamed to bring industrial-grade private 5G networks to factory automation, data center and Electric Vehicle charging services. Security and privacy will be crucial to their success, experts say.
“The emerging business models for Industry 4.0 demand close collaboration between the enterprises and ICT-based global communication equipment companies to be better placed to leverage the market opportunities,” Josh Lee, Head of Enterprise at Nokia Korea, said. Through a Memorandum of Understanding, Nokia will provide technical information and solutions to support implementation strategies.
Smart factories, smart hospitals, and other organizations are looking to 5G technology for coverage, control, and low latency. Improved security and privacy capabilities are the main motivations behind the rise in private 5G wireless network projects, according to a report commissioned by Trend Micro Inc., a global cybersecurity company. Information security decision makers from 400 organizations is the U.S., Germany, U.K., and Spain were polled by 451 Research for a report entitled, “Security Expectations in Private 5G Networks: A Journey with Partners.”
“The cloud’s shared responsibility model means these enterprise customers will need to build their own security capabilities,” said Eric Hanselman, chief analyst at 451 Research. “Organizations have great expectations for 5G security, but the quality of their partnerships will be the real differentiator.”
