Old Issue for New Canaan

After a four year hiatus, the issue of a new cell tower in New Canaan, CT is back on the table. As the New Canaanite reports, the Board of Selectmen met with Homeland Towers in 2017 and studied locations that would best suit a cell tower. The project was set aside, but is being revived under the leadership of new First Selectman, Kevin Moynihan.

Homeland Towers is once again working with the Selectman to determine the best site for a 125-foot monopole tower disguised as a pine tree. Two possible host sites for the monopine have been identified, with both situated near West School. The preferred site is within a 47.4 acre parcel on Ponus Ridge that is part of school property. The alternate site is on a nearby cul de sac on Winfield Lane. The school site has been described by those involved as “ideally situated.”

The earlier proposal came to the same conclusion. The source notes that the usual collection of concerns from objectors – visibility, property values, and phantom health concerns – likely influenced the inaction from the Selectmen.

Construction approval and compensation plans have not been announced. However, the need for better wireless coverage in the area suggests that the project will continue to move forward.
