5G has taken to the high seas. A cruise ship with a 5G network will be delivered in China later this year, according to Adora Cruises, a brand of Chinese cruise ships under CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping, CGTN reported. The 5G connectivity is being provided by China Telecom aboard the first China-built large cruise ship, which claims to be the world’s first 5G cruise ship.

Along with 5G, the cruise ship will be equipped with a WiFi 6 network. “By seizing a first-mover advantage in the cruise industry’s 5G market, we hope to set a new standard for digital communication in the marine travel sector,” said Chen Ranfeng, managing director of CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping. The company is a joint venture between China State Shipbuilding Corporation and the U.S.-based Carnival Corporation.

The joint venture’s first two China-built large cruise ships are currently under construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Corp, and will be operated under the brand name of Adora in the future, according to Invest in China. The first 135,500-gross-ton Adora cruise ship is expected to launch by the end of 2023, while the second vessel is currently still being designed and constructed.

“We will focus on network communication, digital high-definition, as well as AR/VR and other content services, in order to further improve the guest experience and jointly promote the high-quality development of the tourism economy,” said Gong Bo of China Telecom’s Shanghai branch.
