After agreeing to a lease nine years ago, the Palomar Baptist Church in Fayette County, KY is finally gaining a cell tower. As the Lexington Herald Leader reports, the Urban County Planning Commission has approved a request to build a 125-foot cell tower on church grounds. The petition was submitted by Municipal Communications III, LLC and DISH Network, LLC, and passed with a 5-3 vote.

The new monopole cell tower will occupy a 60-foot by 60-foot fenced site, complete with landscaping. Although some neighbors argued against the tower for aesthetic reasons, Attorney David Pike, representing Municipal Communications and DISH Network, advised the Planning Commission that federal rules prohibit banning the tower simply because some consider it “ugly.”Ā

“There will be no service in this area without this structure,” stated Pike.

Pike also noted that DISH has worked hard to make use of existing structures and has been able to provide coverage across the county by colocating equipment at 27 other sites.
