One of three historic regions that comprise the Czech Republic, Moravia is undergoing an upgrade of its 5G network. As OPP.Today reports, telecommunications agency CETIN has already completed 2,600 revisions of a projected 4,200 locations in central Moravia. In addition to installing 814 base stations, the project has also been proactive in removing Huawei and Nokia technologies in favor of Ericsson equipment. The effort is being hailed as the Czech Republic’s largest modern technical modernization.

Adam Zbiejczuk, CETIN spokesperson, noted that the current modernization efforts are not limited to 5G, but also involve the replacement of 2G and 4G components. He added that the ultimate goal is to deliver high-quality, fast, and reliable mobile network service for all users.

To maintain connections during the overhaul, CETIN has employed a swap-out strategy that allows neighboring cell towers to pick up the slack while a location is being renovated, according to OPP.Today. The process takes three or four engineers approximately 70 hours to complete. Identifying, preparing, and completing a site takes an average of six months. There are 200 technicians engaged in the ongoing effort to refit the cell towers.

CETIN is part of the larger PFF Group, an international diversified investment group. The telecommunication arm CETIN is positioning itself to be the premier wholesaler for 5G and fiber in the Czech Republic. Once the current project in Moravia is completed, the company has indicated that it plans to modernize an additional 1,000 transmitters in early 2024.
