Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is bringing network functionality to enterprise and public sector customers. Its new Mobile Onsite Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) delivers a private network, private mobile edge compute (MEC), SD-Wan, and satellite connectivity to customers in a variety of customer-specific locations. The 10-foot portable trailer houses servers for dual-core network capabilities supporting both 4G and 5G standalone functionality. The mobile unit also provides radios, antennas and power for scalable, reliable 5G and satellite communications, along with MEC that can be managed locally by enterprise and public sector customers for network flexibility wherever they need it.

The first Mobile Onsite NaaS deployment is at Lockheed Martin’s Waterton, CO campus. Verizon said the system was set up within hours of arriving on site and had completed testing over a satellite communications connection.

Dan Rice, VP-5G.MIL® Programs at Lockheed Martin comments, “As the first host of this advanced system, we look forward to continuing to collaborate with Verizon on our 5G.MIL® Unified Network Solutions … to provide cohesive communications, edge processing and advanced networking capabilities for interoperable, resilient and secure connectivity and data flow across all domains.”

“By delivering the mission critical connectivity … to customer locations, we are demonstrating how 5G and edge computing can help customers address their strategic priorities and continue to develop advanced solutions,” says Srini Kalapala, Verizon SVP for Technology and Product Development. “A private network on location delivers the high-speed, high-capacity, and low-latency needed for various applications as well as greater privacy and security.”

The company says that Mobile OnSite NaaS can support enterprise and public sector customers in locations where accessing 5G network connections and coverage can be challenging. The system offers opportunities for utilities, agriculture, and manufacturing industries to take advantage of the private network and MEC service at designated locations without incurring the cost of a permanent installation.

Verizon adds that Mobile Onsite NaaS can be used as a Mobile Lab-as-a-Service at Verizon Innovation Labs in Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco for customer development and testing of new services.
