On the heels of the Nebraska Public Service Commission’s declaration of support for cell tower construction, UScellular (NYSE: USM) has announced that it is the recipient of a large award. The Nebraska Universal Service Fund Wireless (NUSF) Program has chosen to direct $3.5 million in broadband funding to the carrier. UScellular reports that it will use the monies to build cell towers in Beaver Crossing, Beemer, Memphis, Monroe, Naponee and Nehawaka to bring digital connectivity to the underserved.
“The Nebraska Public Service Commission has been a champion for wireless service for years, and we commend them for their leadership in helping to connect the hardest-to-reach areas of our state,” stated Monique Moore, Director of Sales and Operations for UScellular in Nebraska. “This funding will help us ensure residents and businesses across the state have reliable, wireless connectivity at home and on-the-go, and we look forward to working with the Commission on their efforts to ensure the Fund Program continues to be an effective tool to help bridge the digital divide in Nebraska.”
The NUSF has an established history with UScellular, first working with the company in 2010, to help build and maintain cell towers in rural areas of the state. Cell tower projects in Adams, Ayr, Brainard, Cedar Rapids, Edgar, Elmwood, Murray, Newcastle, Niobrara, Ponca and Tobias are already underway thanks to a $5.1 million grant awarded in 2022. This new cadre of cell towers is expected to be operational in 2024.
