DISH Wireless, the wireless subsidiary of DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH), operates the Boost Wireless Network that currently offers 5G broadband service to at least 70 percent of the U.S. population having reached that coverage bogey in June, Inside Towers reported.
The network is now live with 5G voice (referred to as Voice over New Radio or VoNR) in 12 new markets: Billings, MT; Cincinnati, OH; Columbia, SC; Denver, CO; Fayetteville, NC; Jacksonville, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR; Shreveport, LA; Tucson, AZ; and, Washington, D.C. DISH is building the nation’s first virtualized, O-RAN 5G broadband network, and promotes its wireless services under the Boost Infinite, Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile brands.
DISH claims that the Boost Wireless Network is also the first mobile network operator to deploy VoNR on a large commercial scale. The company has additional markets set to go live every month through the first half of 2024. New Boost Infinite and Boost Mobile subscribers who purchase a compatible device can access the Boost Wireless Network in live markets now including these 12 new markets.
“Our network covers over 73 percent of the U.S. population with broadband, and we haven’t stopped there. The Boost Wireless Network is the largest commercial deployment of 5G voice, or VoNR, in the world. It already reaches more than 140 million Americans in over 85 markets,” said John Swieringa, DISH, president of technology and COO. “The continued rollout of VoNR markets every month allows us to compete at scale, as the nation’s fourth wireless carrier.”
DISH reported 7.5 million prepaid Boost Mobile MVNO subscribers at the end of 3Q23. The subscriber count is down from 8.0 million in 3Q22. The company is trying to attract customers to its Boost Infinite 5G network by offering high-speed data connectivity and VoNR available on a variety of phones and with low-cost subscription plans starting at $25 per month. DISH Wireless has a marketing agreement to sell smartphones and Boost Infinite subscriptions through Amazon, Inside Towers reported.
Current Boost Wireless Network-compatible devices include the iPhone 15 family, Samsung A23 5G, motorola edge+ and razr, moto g Stylus and 5G, and the custom, Boost-exclusive Celero 5G+. Additional compatible devices continue to become available. Compatible devices will also connect Boost Mobile MVNO subscribers with the company’s two partner networks, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) and AT&T (NYSE: T), giving customers nationwide wireless voice and data coverage.
