Telecom heavyweights Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Edzcom have announced a joint copper mining venture. The Pyhäsalmi mine in Pyhäjärvi, Finland is already one of the deepest in Europe. As Mining Magazine reports, it will soon become the host site for the “FutureMINE-future digital test mine project.”

The project will focus on testing and verifying various mining applications, as well as developing future mining services. Reaching approximately 4,741 feet underground, the mine will feature a 5G network throughout its depths. Designed for this unique situation, the network will support predictive maintenance, location services, 3D modeling, advanced analytics, in addition to mining automation, said the partners. Nokia and Edzcom (a Cellnex subsidiary), will be operating under the banner of Callio Pyhäjärvi, an entity created to helm mine re-use operations.

“We have full confidence that this project will bring about transformative changes not only to the mining industry but also to the community of Pyhäjärvi,” stated Town Manager, Henrik Kiviniemi, “Callio firmly believes in the power of innovation and technology to drive positive impact. We chose Edzcom as they are the undisputed leader in Private Networks with over 20 references in Finland including a portfolio of top leader industries.”

“Edzcom and Nokia are the valued partners chosen for this long-term strategic collaboration due to their extensive experience in private wireless networks and their commitment to join us on this journey ahead,” agreed Sakari Nokela, Chief Development Officer at Callio Pyhäjärvi, according to Mining Magazine. “Callio recognizes the importance of agility and adaptability in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. Through this partnership, we are confident in our ability to make dynamic changes that optimize our network infrastructure and propel us towards greater efficiency and innovation.”
