Brightspeed, an ISP based in Charlotte, NC, has announced the introduction of a fixed wireless voice and data solution utilizing Verizon’s (NYSE: VZ) mobile network. This fixed wireless service aims to replace outdated copper cables for customers currently dependent on them.
In collaboration with Verizon, this new fixed wireless solution provides a more immediate and reliable high-speed connectivity option, particularly for homes and businesses that may not be reached by Brightspeed’s planned fiber broadband network in the near future or at all. The implementation of this fixed wireless solution will enhance services for numerous existing Brightspeed DSL customers.
Brightspeed is investing several billion dollars to deploy its advanced fiber broadband network across its 20-state service areas in the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S., targeting the replacement of aging copper telecommunications infrastructure. Despite this significant investment, deploying the fiber network to over four million homes and businesses will require time and cannot encompass the nearly seven million locations within its footprint.
“Ultimately, our objective is to provide every home and business within our 20-state service area with a more reliable and resilient alternative to copper voice and data services,” stated Tom Maguire, Brightspeed CEO. “Obsolete copper networks are expensive to maintain, prone to weather-related problems, and inadequate for supporting modern technology, telecommunications innovation, and future needs. This fixed wireless solution will assist those who have faced unreliable copper service, residing in areas where our fiber network is yet unavailable.”
