Several telecom trade associations have banded together to lobby Congress to fix the funding structure for the Universal Service Fund (USF) before it collapses. Established by the FCC in 1997, the fund helps deliver broadband and phone services at affordable rates to rural communities, low-income households, schools, libraries, and healthcare providers.
The coalition includes NCTA – The Internet & Television Association, the Competitive Carriers Association, and GCI Communications Corp. The group wants lawmakers to act before an expected Supreme Court ruling this summer concerning the constitutionality of the $8.1 billion USF, according to Broadband Breakfast.
“The Keep America Connected Coalition is an advocacy alliance dedicated to ensuring the continuation of universal service funds,” states the group on its website. “We’re bringing together leaders from rural communities, school districts, trade associations, telecommunications providers and public service organizations to advocate for a legislative solution that will keep every community in America connected.”
