US Ignite, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization specializing in connectivity and technology innovation, has announced a strategic partnership with Harris County, TX. US Ignite will be tasked with developing a comprehensive broadband plan for the county. This initiative aims to ensure that Harris County’s Broadband Plan is aligned with advancements in technology, policy changes, and the county’s vision for enhanced connectivity.
Sindu Menon, CIO and Executive Director of Harris County Universal Services, stated, “Reliable high-speed internet is no longer a luxury—it is essential for economic opportunity.” Harris County, which includes Houston as its county seat, is home to approximately five million residents. It is the most populous county in Texas and the third-most populous county in the United States, following Los Angeles, CA, and Cook County, IL, according to innovationmap.
As part of this initiative, US Ignite will thoroughly evaluate Harris County’s existing broadband plan to ensure its alignment with industry best practices and recent advancements in broadband strategy. Harris County’s investment in broadband planning reflects a growing trend among local governments that recognize internet access as a critical infrastructure. Furthermore, an updated Broadband Plan will position the county favorably to compete for federal and state broadband funding opportunities. US Ignite anticipates delivering the broadband plan to Harris County officials by May 2025.
