In 2017, Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) published the TIA-222-H ANSI Structural Standard for Antenna Supporting Structures which addressed the requirements for the structural design and fabrication of new, and the modification of existing antenna supporting structures, antennas, appurtenance mounting systems, structural components, guy assemblies, insulators and foundations.
Tower industry software developer Tower Numerics recently engaged Dave Brinker, a former Vice President of Engineering at ROHN Products and 42-year veteran of the wireless infrastructure industry, to provide a commentary on the Standard and give background information on most of its provisions. The 166-page commentary in its entirety can be seen here.
“This is the first document of this kind for the communication tower industry, as full commentaries have never been written for the TIA-222 Standard series before,” said Peter Chojnacki, President of Tower Numerics. “And while it is not an official TIA document, the TIA TR-14 Committee, responsible for the ANSI/TIA-222 Standard, is looking into using it, with applicable amendments, as the official Commentary on the TIA-222 Standard’s future Revisions,” he said.
Author David Brinker said the commentary has been a desired addition to the Standard for many years to document the basis of the unique requirements for communication and small wind turbine supporting structures.
“It is my hope,” Brinker said, “that the Commentary provided will serve as a starting point for including a commentary in future revisions of the Standard.”
