Located on the Connecticut shoreline, the quaint New England village of Noank could soon host a new cell tower. As The Day reports, discussions are underway to build a 155-foot monopole on grounds currently occupied by an old foundry and boat storage facilities. The one-acre property was suggested by Tarpon Towers as the site that would offer the best connectivity with the lowest impact on residents.
A Tarpon representative noted that the location is within the boundaries of a marina and is further bordered by railroad tracks. DISH Wireless and AT&T have indicated that a cell tower is needed to “provide enhanced wireless communications and improved 911 service” in the region. Plans also call for space for two future colocation tenants who can benefit from the existing tower to add additional antennas to the proposed monopole.
Legal notification from Tarpon Towers’ attorneys has launched the 90-day consultation period required before an application can be submitted. The company has said it would be open to meeting with local officials to discuss alternative recommendations for the tower. The public will have an opportunity to weigh in later, but has not been invited to participate in the discussions at this time.
Whether the plan to build a cell tower at the preferred location at 70 Marsh Road in Noank is approved, modified, or rejected is a matter for the Connecticut Siting Council to determine. The Noank Zoning Commission has noted that it intends to review the proposal at a meeting next week, according to The Day.
