The State of Arkansas has named Glen Howie as its new broadband director to lead the state’s broadband expansion program. Howie served in the Louisiana Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity where he developed regulations for that state’s $177 million infrastructure grant program, according to KUAR-FM.
“Like railways two centuries ago and electricity 100 years ago, broadband internet access today has become a critical piece of infrastructure, igniting economic growth, improving health outcomes, enhancing agricultural output, and advancing the educational experience of our children,” Howie said. “It is an honor and privilege to be entrusted to build upon the prior success of the state broadband office and lead the team charged with providing a transformational opportunity to all Arkansans.”
As part of his job, Howie will advise Gov. Asa Hutchinson on internet-related issues. Hutchinson created the Arkansas Broadband Office three years ago, which aims to improve internet access in rural parts of the state.
“Not only does he come highly recommended with a wealth of knowledge concerning broadband policy, but he has been on the frontline in one of the most highly regarded broadband offices in the country,” Secretary of Commerce Mike Preston said. “He knows how we need to focus our efforts to ensure that everyone in Arkansas has access to affordable broadband and has the skills to use it. I have no doubt that he will hit the ground running with fresh ideas to make our goals a reality.”
