The cradle of civilization, Greece, is looking to build Europe’s largest and greenest smart city close to Athens. In the works for 10 years, the $8 billion development will take root in the former Ellinikon International Airport and is dubbed The Ellinikon.
“A next generation smart city, Ellinikon, will be a state-of-the-art smart district that pioneers the future of home, work, and entertainment; utilizing technology to deliver sustainability and serve the people of tomorrow,” LAMDA Development said on its web site. “Our vision is to revitalize this iconic site into a dynamic hub that integrates modern living, green spaces, and cutting-edge technology.”
The development will integrate advanced technologies, including Internet of Things, artificial intelligence analytics, fiber optic networks and 5G wireless networks. Ellinikon aims to provide a digitally assisted everyday life to its residents and employees, as well as serving visitors, according to LAMDA.
The development will feature smart infrastructure, connectivity, mobility, and water management. The smart infrastructure will feature smart sensors, advanced AI algorithms and underground networks that are designed to improve the public’s daily experience. Mobility will be improved through smart parking assistance and smart mobility sharing schemes for bikes, e-bikes and scooters. Smart water management will minimize fresh water consumption through the advanced water management and irrigation IoT technologies.
