Addressing city-wide connectivity complaints, Mayor Brandon Scott has announced plans for free WiFi service in Baltimore. As WMAR-TV reports, the aptly named FreeBmoreWiFi, aims to extend cost-free WiFI throughout the city.
The program will be backed by American Rescue Plan Act monies and will be administered by the Office of Broadband and Digital Equity. With plans to kick off the program in 2024, the first sites to benefit will be the Middle Branch Fitness and Wellness facility and the Solo Gibbs Recreation Center.
“In today’s digital age,” stated Mayor Scott, “access to reliable internet is a necessity and closing the digital divide is one of the most important civil rights issues of our time.”
“FreeBmoreWiFi is about more than internet access,” Baltimore City IT Director Todd Carter told WMAR-TV. “It’s about inclusivity and helps residents leverage the power of technology for their benefit.”
