Belgium Operator Citymesh has chosen Nokia’s turnkey 5G-connected drone platform for its nationwide drone network, known as SENSE. The drone network platform includes 70 Drone-in-a-Box units, which are equipped with video and thermal cameras to provide real-time, aerial data collection. The drones will be on stand-by 24/7 and remotely managed from five centralized operations centers.

Helped by high-definition, AI-enhanced thermal imaging, the drones will capture real-time aerial footage – such as smoke plumes, fire parameters, and number and location of people in the 15 minutes following an emergency call. This information will aid emergency teams in developing a plan of action that can save lives and limit damage to affected assets and natural resources.

Belgium’s emergency services can receive more than two million calls a year, and typically police and fire brigades are dispatched with incomplete data that can stymie the efficiency of their response. With Nokia Drone Networks, pilots will be able to operate 24/7 and dispatch drones from docking stations strategically located across the country.
