“Big Ski” in Aspen Backs Cell Tower Growth

Popularly known as SkiCo, the Colorado outfit that manages four ski resorts – Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass – has made a commitment to cell towers and safety. As Snow Brains reports, the Aspen Skiing Company says it’s forging ahead to build nine new cell towers across its network of ski slopes. The cell towers will range in height from 30 feet to 90 feet and will host carriers T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.

“Providing cell coverage for public safety reasons was more important [than profits or aesthetics],” Mak Keeling, SkiCo’s VP of Mountain Planning and Development, told the Snowmass Village Town Council.

Previous plans to install cell towers on the mountain sides have met with resistance from local residents. Some objectors continue to lobby against plans to erect a 60-foot tower at Two Creeks base, according to Snow Brains. Keeling has countered that the welfare of lost or injured skiers should be the most important concern.

While there are still some specifics to be ironed out, SkiCo anticipates beginning construction on the project in 2024, with a projected completion date in 2025.
