Ukraine’s 12th Special Forces Brigade “Azov” shared a striking image of a bird’s nest made from discarded fiberglass cable, highlighting nature’s adaptation to the debris of war. The non-biodegradable fiber-optic cables, used by drone guidance systems, are left tangled across the landscape after missions.
“This is just one example of how nature persists amid war,” read the brigade’s post on Telegram. The nest was discovered near Torets by soldiers from a support battalion.
The widespread use of fiber-optic drones has created environmental and operational challenges for Ukrainian forces. These drones, hard to detect and resistant to interference, leave behind long spools of thin cable. Ukrainian media reports that the Defense Forces targeted the only Russian factory producing these cables in April 2024.
