The number of cell towers popping up all over Brazil continues to increase, reports TeleSemana.com, with American Tower leading the pack. A report released by S&P Global Market Intelligence counted 81,567 cell towers, with 22,800 constructed by American Tower. Rounding out the top slots are Highline do Brasil with 13,500 cell towers, and SBA Communications and Sitios Latam (under the  América Móvil umbrella) in a close race for third and fourth positions. SBA Communications currently leads with 11,828 structures, closely followed by Sitios Latam with 11,300.

Players in the next tier include Winity with 7,500 towers and IHS Towers with a comfortable 7,139. Up and coming providers include QMC Telecom with 3,200 cell towers, TorreSur Group counting 2,800, and a notable 1,500 from Brasil Tower Co.

S&P Global Market Intelligence predicts that the changing 5G landscape will continue to see more mergers, break-aways, and shared sites as the telecoms race to deliver digital connectivity across Brazil. While the 14.7 million 5G users represent only 6 percent of the 252.4 million digitally connected in the country, Anatel, the National Telecommunications Agency in Brazil reports that it is working towards improving 4G and 5G services. An improvement in 4G and 5G infrastructure will go hand in hand with deactivating antiquated 2G and 3G networks, noted Anatel.
