UPDATE President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday that FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr will become the next Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Carr, the senior Republican member of the FCC, was originally nominated to the Commission by Trump in 2017, and has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times. His current term extends through 2029. Inside Towers recently reported on what a Carr FCC would like.

Trump praised Carr in a statement, calling him “a warrior for Free Speech” and commending his efforts to reduce regulatory burdens and promote economic growth. “He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America’s Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America,” Trump stated.

Background on Brendan Carr:

  • FCC Tenure: Carr has served on the FCC since 2012, including as an advisor to former FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, where he played a significant role in key policy initiatives.
  • Legal Expertise: He previously worked as an appellate and regulatory attorney and clerked for Judge Dennis Shedd on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
  • Education: Carr holds a J.D. magna cum laude from the Catholic University of America, where he was an editor for the Catholic University Law Review, and a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University.

Carr’s appointment signals a continued push for deregulation in telecommunications, emphasizing rural broadband deployment, free speech protections, and policies designed to support innovation and economic development. As chairman, Carr is expected to advance conservative policy priorities and continue reshaping the FCC’s agenda to reflect the administration’s goals.
