A pole doing double duty as a cell tower and a light standard for the school’s football field caught fire and collapsed Tuesday in Chula Vista, according to KSWB-TV. Authorities said the fire caused extensive damage to the pole and collateral damage to the stadium facility.
The Chula Vista Fire Department said the pole fire started about 7:30 p.m. on the property of Otay Ranch High School. No injuries were reported and causes of the blaze are under investigation. The fire-weakened structure tower fell onto the bleachers and careened onto the rubberized track surrounding the field. Crews had to delay putting out the fire until local power provider SDG&E arrived to turn off electricity to the tower.
No dollar estimate on damages has yet been determined.
