A Trillion Towering Trees

Verizon is planting trees, actual trees, and has announced its commitment to plant 20 million of them by 2030. This doubles the original goal the company set last year of planting 10 million new trees. By its own estimation, Verizon says it has planted three million trees since 2009, reports Yahoo Finance. The increasing reforestation goals are part of the reason for Verizon joining the Trillion Trees Platform.

The World Economic Forum and American Forests organized 1t.org to aid in the global effort to conserve and restore forests, and to plant one trillion trees around the world. “As one of the largest telecoms providers in the United States, it’s wonderful to see Verizon’s ambitious commitment to grow 20 million trees by 2030. The U.S. Chapter of 1t.org is thrilled to receive Verizon’s pledge, and hope that it inspires other companies to join the global movement to conserve, restore and grow our forests,” said the Director of Nature-Based Solutions, World Economic Forum, Justin Adams.

Verizon would like consumers to know that the company is actively addressing climate protection measures. For example, as holiday shopping heats up, the bags customers will be carrying out of its retail stores will be 100 percent recyclable and reusable. Additionally, the bags are made of 90 percent recycled material.

Less visible to the consumer will be Verizon’s focus on using renewable energy. The company says it aims to use renewable energy for at least 50 percent of its operations by 2025. Verizon has invested in alternative energy sources, like solar and wind power and has partnered with other organizations with similar goals.

“The commitments Verizon has made to protect the environment call for partnerships across the entire company to build solutions that will create impact. The launch of our new, sustainable retail bag and the doubling of our tree planting efforts are great examples of the partnership between marketing and sustainability to create not only the future of the consumer experience but also the future of a healthy planet,” stated Diego Scotti, Chief Marketing Officer, Verizon.
