Openreach is investing in “full fibre” broadband in the United Kingdom and has contracted with Telent to help build its US$15.4 billion network. Touted as one of the largest infrastructure projects in the U.K, the agreement between Openreach and Telent has an 18 month completion window and is expected to bring broadband to 20 million homes and businesses, reports DMN Newswire.

Job duties will be split between the two entities with Telent taking on construction and related activities like surveying and testing. Openreach is responsible for the client base. “This is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the U.K. today,” said Kevin Murphy, MD for Fibre and Network Delivery at Openreach. “If we’re going to deliver the enormous social, environmental and economic benefits that Full Fibre can bring, it’s important that we can build the new network efficiently, safely, and without compromising on quality.”

Telent and Openreach are also partnering to hire and train candidates to work on the project. Training will be provided at the twelve training schools across the U.K. Interested parties can learn more here.

“We are delighted to have been chosen by Openreach to be a major supplier as it expands the number of homes with access to ultra-fast fibre broadband,” stated Ric Welsby, Managing Director of Telent’s Infrastructure Service Division. “The pandemic and demonstrated the critical nature of fast and reliable broadband and Openreach is accelerating its deployment to meet increased demand. We are extremely proud to be playing a part in the roll out of this important national infrastructure.”
