The Canadian government announced it will auction off C-band frequencies in the 3500 MHz band on June 15. A second auction for frequencies in the 3800 MHz band is planned for 2023. As Advanced Television reports, the goal of the auction is to allow the spectrum to be repurposed for 5G applications. A third auction planned for 2025 is slated to address the 4000-4200 MHz band slot, but details for this future auction are still being worked out.
“Our government is committed to making the right spectrum available to support the highest quality wireless services and the rollout of 5G technologies. We know these services will drive innovative new technologies, from clean energy to telemedicine, while also creating good jobs and new products for Canadians living in rural and remote areas,” stated François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
Fixed satellite services providers can continue to use the whole 500 MHz in more remote areas. The government recognizes that in rural areas that rely on satellite connections, including broadband applications, additional protection for existing services will help ensure future 5G services.
“The decision will also help connect more Canadians to high-speed internet,” Champagne continued. “With large amounts of spectrum maintained for satellite services in remote areas and the amount of spectrum available to support wireless broadband services increased from 50 MHz to 80 MHz, Canadians living in rural areas will have better access to high-speed networks.”
