The residents of the South Carolina town just west of Charlotte, NC are not feeling too lucky, considering town officials voted to erect a 180-foot cell tower without telling those who live close to the proposed site. In fact, they’re heading to a fight with the Zoning Board of Appeals. Neighbors are “distraught and disgruntled” because they knew nothing about the tower that could be as close as a “few dozen yards” to homes, reports HeraldOnline.com.
Plans call for the tower to be built on private property owned by a plumbing company and rented to Verizon Wireless. Clover Town Councilman Todd Blanton represents the area where the tower is set to be built, and he is leading the cause of raising $300 to file the appeal with Clover’s zoning board. Blanton told HeraldOnline.com that he didn’t know about the tower until he saw a construction crew at the site. Residents claim that the tower violates the town’s zoning code, which, according to HeraldOnline.com states: “Towers or antennas shall be located such that adequate setbacks are provided on all sides to prevent the tower’s fall zone from encroaching onto adjoining properties. Should this fall zone encroach onto another property, a recorded easement may be prepared and signed by the adjacent property owner to ensure there will not be any structure built within the fall zone.”
Town officials don’t agree, and say that there is no requirement to tell residents because the zoning is industrial.
Another town councilman, Wes Spurrier, said “he was told by town officials the tower design has a 42-foot ‘fall zone’ that conforms to Clover zoning code.” The tower was approved October 14 after an October 2 application.
