In Georgia over the weekend, a pilot died in a plane crash following an encounter with a guy wire from a broadcast tower. According to WGXA-TV, the pilot, identified as Jake Boney, was crop dusting a sunflower field outside of Rhine in Dodge County when his fixed-wing American Champion Aircraft 8KCAB hit the tower’s guy wire.
The FAA reported the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. A local resident who heard the crash, Barbara Yawn, said the plane made several passes over the field, noting at the time it was unusual to hear the sound of crop dusting occurring on a Sunday and late in the evening.
Dodge County Sheriff, Brian Robinson said this was the second time the 30-year old pilot had crashed from hitting a guy wire. In September 2020, Boney was crop dusting a cotton field in Hawkinsville, GA when the right wing of his plane hit a cell phone tower. Boney, owner of Jake Boney Aviation, suffered injuries including broken bones in his leg and face in that incident, and spent months in recovery following surgery and physical therapy. Afterward he told WGXA-TV that he was going to pursue his life-long passion for flying. The owners of the towers were not identified by authorities.
