Debate in Its Third Year Between Bedford Residents and Town Council

Last week the Bedford Town Council heard concerns from residents regarding the proposed 130-foot cell tower at Chubbuck Road, near the Riddle Brook Elementary School, reported the New Hampshire Political Buzz.

The tower, originally proposed by Crown Castle several years ago, was blocked after proper channels were not followed in getting the town council’s approval of the lease agreement, resulting in the zoning board rejecting the plan. Crown Castle sued the town due to the mishandling of the proposal. A second company, Blue Sky, LLC has proposed the construction of a tower at the same location and the lease is now under review with Rick Sawyer, Town Manager.

Attorney Earl Duval, on behalf of Blue Sky, LLC, noted that if the town can’t come to an agreement with his client, who is representing Verizon Wireless, they will seek an alternate location to build the tower, specifically on private property. Despite the vehement opposition by residents, the telecommunications company is determined to construct the tower to better serve the town.

The construction of the cell tower has been a hot button issue with area residents for over three years. Residents cite concerns questioning the coverage the tower will provide – the perception is that improved service will only impact a few streets in the area. Also, the tower will not improve safety communications in the town, another drawback according to residents. One resident noted fears that home values will decrease because of the tower, making it harder to sell to a potential buyer. These residents have been opposing the tower’s construction since the first proposal and are irate that the town council has not yet vetoed the plan.

Chairwoman Kelleigh Murphy brought a motion forward to have the council vote to oppose the tower, but several members of the council asked for additional information before casting their vote. There’s no word regarding when a final decision will be made.
