After 18 months of recovery, adaptation and rapid innovation, yesterday marked the return of the Mobile World Live Conference (MWC) to Los Angeles running from October 26 to 28. In partnership with CTIA, the GSMA once again convened North America’s mobile industry executives at the Los Angeles Convention Center, to explore first-hand how the 5G era, IoT connectivity, telco cloud and disruptive technologies are shaping the future. More than 170 experts have been confirmed to speak, including AT&T, Verizon, Intel, IBM and Google. Mobile World Live, the Official Broadcast Media Partner of the GSMA, will livestream the keynotes and select sessions during the event direct to this page.
In the opening keynote, Stephanie Lynch-Habib, CMO of GSMA explained 327 million people in North America were subscribed to mobile services by the end of 2020, 83 percent of the overall population. Lynch-Habib, underlined the importance of the mobile sector to the North American economy, a contribution she argued remained pivotal for the region’s growth. Highlighting ways in which the industry contributed to North America, she cited figures showing around $1 trillion of economic value generated in 2020, representing 4.4 percent of the region’s total GDP, alongside supporting more than 2.1 million jobs.
“Today marks the first day in two years that North America’s mobile ecosystem leaders have had the opportunity to come together in-person at MWC LA. This year’s theme, Connected Impact, is all about recognizing the power of mobile technology to affect meaningful change. And whilst we continue to wrestle with defining a new normal, let’s remember to celebrate the resilience and progress the industry has made despite a time of extraordinary challenges. Our exhibitors, partners and attendees are committed to inspiring change, sharing insights and moving forward a new era of connectivity as we look to a post-pandemic future,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA.
Redefining Mobile Connectivity
In a 5G era, consumers expect a seamless connectivity experience whether they’re outside or in the home. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, expectations remain high as 5G commercialization is well underway. Network service providers have a great opportunity to gain competitive advantage as technology continues to transform our world in ground-breaking ways; delivering high speeds, supporting huge bandwidth and reducing latency. As operators continue to scale their 5G networks and services, a key question remains; how and where can 5G reach its true potential?
