Wireless market analytics firm, Opensignal, in its latest report on the U.S. mobile market recently quantified how the 5G experience varies across twenty U.S. states. The company published the report, USA Mobile Network Experience January 2021, which analyzes the overall experience of all mobile users.
The company gave T-Mobile the 5G Download Speed award for the first time, saying T-Mo users saw average 5G download speeds of 58.1 Mbps, ahead of AT&T’s score of 53.8 Mbps and Verizon’s of 47.4 Mbps. Average 5G download speed for T-Mobile users, according to Opensignal, had increased from 49.2 Mbps in its last report, thereby taking the award away from Verizon.
Another finding showed T-Mobile winning the 5G Availability award with a score of 30.1 percent, up from 22.5 percent, six months ago. The survey lauded other 5G carriers that Opensignal says also made impressive progress since the last report. Verizon 5G users’ time connected to 5G improved from the 0.4 percent to 9.5 percent, with AT&T increasing from 10.3 percent to 18.8 percent.
Opensignal’s survey said in the 20 5G states it analyzed, T-Mobile had a clean sweep winning all of the state 5G Availability awards. AT&T came away with eight state awards and 33 joint wins. T-Mobile won the greatest number of state 5G Download and Upload Speed awards. Similarly, Verizon won the most state 5G Video Experience awards with six outright wins and 14 joint wins — AT&T was the main 5G Video Experience challenger to Verizon, jointly winning 14 states.
5G download speeds over 70 Mbps were surveyed on all three carriers, but in different states. The analysis showed download speed across states on all three carriers was over 70 Mbps while not in all areas. AT&T users experienced 5G download speeds over 70 Mbps in Maryland and Washington, while Verizon 5G users saw such average 5G speeds in New York. T-Mobile users saw average 5G download speed of over 70 Mbps in four states: Alabama, Illinois, New York and New Jersey.
