The Madison County, NE sheriff had a sit down with County Board Commissioners last Wednesday regarding enhancing emergency communications. The Norfolk Daily News reported that Madison County Sheriff Todd Volk spoke of upgrading all radios and constructing a new tower for enhanced coverage.

Volk noted that countywide radio upgrades had been discussed for years. He would like to “get the ball rolling now,” hoping the radios can be purchased in the next fiscal year, after June 30.

Regarding the tower upgrade, Volk said, “It depends on the new technology radios on what we are going to need for towers. And those are maintained by the county and some by emergency management, too.”

Volk did not have information on the cost for the radios, but federal funds should be available to cover expenses, the Daily News reported. According to Troy Uhlir, county board chairman, the next step will be to assemble a bid and determine the costs to individual towns for installation, training, and maintenance.
