The Philippines Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has set a goal of building 5,000 new towers each year over the next three years. Business World reported that the objective is to improve connectivity via the CHIP (Connect, Harness, Innovate, Protect) framework since the country is ranked 85th in global mobile internet speeds and 100th for fixed broadband.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei B. Nograles added that the DICT would soon announce the approval of right-of-way for two major connectivity projects, including the National Broadband Program phase one and Luzon Bypass Infrastructure. The announcement will be a key preparatory milestone bringing the projects closer to construction, according to Nograles.

According to Business World,  DICT is slated to release a memorandum “for fiber, common poles, and in-building solutions for national compliance.” One component will be the adoption of a fixed table of fees to be collected by local government units on ICT infrastructure projects and a “standard fee structure for telco firms to install and repair at the barangay [village] level.”

“The ultimate objective is to connect the Filipino people and to provide the means for our kababayan [countrymen] to not just survive, but thrive in the digital age,” added Nograles.
