Pittsfield Struggles to Disconnect

Worn out from fielding complaints from residents who claim a cell tower as the source of their health woes, Pittsfield officials ponder what they would have to do to make the problem go away. According to The Berkshire Eagle, the town Board is considering issuing a cease and desist order to force Verizon to take the cell tower offline.

“It just seems like the best thing to do is make them shut it off,” said Board chair, Bobbie Orsi. “But, before we take that step, I think we need a few more ducks in a row and I need to meet with the mayor.” Orsi added that she wants to “look at the impacts in the community to people who have health issues.”

By coincidence, Pittsfield is also dealing with an uptick in COVID cases, though no one has suggested that the Verizon cell tower has contributed to this health concern. It has, however, left Pittsfield with the daunting task of monitoring and registering the spread of illness throughout the region.

Though there is no proof that the cell tower is responsible for any reported maladies, there is a feeling amongst Board members that some sort of action is needed. “We can’t just keep saying that we’ll do it next month, we’ll do it next month,” noted Orsi. “We have to do something.”

“I’m not very far away from a bold move, frankly, to get this all behind us,” agreed Board member, Stephen Smith. “Not very far at all.”
