Rancho Bernardo Opines About Switch to Eucalyptus

After the Rancho Bernardo Community Planning Board in San Diego balked at the suggestion of a faux pine tree cell tower, members are now pondering whether a faux eucalyptus would be better. As the San Diego Union Tribune reports, AT&T switched the design of the proposed 60-foot tower in hopes of wooing board members with a more attractive tree.

At a meeting earlier this month, the Board voted against the original site selected, a parking lot between the RB Swim & Tennis Club and the parking lot of the Valvoline Instant Oil Change business. Four alternate sites were then suggested, with the more winsome eucalyptus swapped out for the original monopine.

Speaking on behalf of AT&T, project representatives Becky Todd and Christine Moore explained to the Board why coverage needs require a new cell tower in the vicinity. They argued that the tennis club location would provide the best connectivity for the growing number of people working and studying from home. This location, “Is furthest from homes, has adequate ground space, has trees to help buffer it visually and will not interrupt other uses,” Todd told the Tribune.

Residents provided mixed responses to the proposal, some favoring the stronger connection, and others objecting to the possible visual impact and phantom health concerns. The vote was tabled until the December 7 meeting, giving Board members more time to weigh their options.
