Santa Barbara Public Works Department is set to perform maintenance on a 198-foot tower to bring it into compliance. NOOZHAWK reported repairs performed by Tashijan Towers Corporation, Hatfield and Dawson Consulting Engineers, and Remote Possibilities include reducing the tower’s height to 128-feet and attaching horizontal “whiskers” to the top of the tower to retain signal strength.

The monopole, which has stood since 1965, will be dark during the repairs. The outage will force three local radio stations to go silent for over 72 hours; however, the stations will continue to stream regular broadcasts online.

The monopole’s “triplexer” allows three radio stations owned by Rincon Broadcasting — KZSB-AM (1290 kHz), KCLU-AM (1340 kHz), and KOSJ-AM (1490 kHz) — to share the single tower. NOOZHAWK reported that the tower is “believed to be the only working triplexed broadcasting monopole in North America.”
