Sprint recently revealed the Sprint Magic Box, the world’s first all–wireless small cell. This new plug–and–play LTE small cell is meant for both business and consumer use and provides 30,000 square feet of coverage indoors. This technology brings customers a better LTE network and enhanced user experience, dramatically improving data coverage plus download and upload speeds by 200 percent, on average, reported Benzinga.com.
According to Sprint CTO Dr. John Saw, “Sprint Magic Box is going to quickly transform our network, and it is key to delivering an amazing experience to customers today as we build the kind of dense urban infrastructures needed for 5G.” With 204 MHz of spectrum nationwide and more than 160 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum in the top 100 U.S. markets, Sprint has more spectrum capacity than any other U.S. carrier, an advantage that the Sprint Magic Box can maximize, according to the May 3 announcement.
The latest technology will benefit the network and the customer. The new technology offers ease of installation for the consumer, is self-configuring, and a compact size (about the size of a shoebox). The unit should be placed near a window, plugged into a power outlet and will operate within minutes, according to the carrier. From there, customers can surf the web and stream video. The Sprint Magic Box’s signal also extends coverage for nearby users; offering connections 100 meters outside a building as well, improving street-level network performance.
Sprint is testing this new technology in cities including Denver, San Francisco, Indianapolis, New York, Chicago, and Houston. Results to-date show improved download speeds.
