T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced this week it made a strategic investment of nearly $3 billion in the FCC’s Auction 110, securing an average of 21 MHz in the 3.45-3.55 GHz band in areas covering 184 million people across the U.S.
T-Mobile’s 5G download speeds are already fast. They have been driven by its deployment of the 2.5 GHz band, according to OpenSignal analysis. Average 5G download speeds experienced by T-Mobile users when connected to the 2.5 GHz band increased by more than 40 percent, from 170.1 Mbps in March 2021 to 239.3 Mbps in September 2021.
Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile, said: “While Verizon and AT&T remain locked in a 5G race for second place, we’ll use this additional spectrum to take our 5G network to the next level and deliver even greater 5G performance to our customers across the nation.”
Of the 310 million people T-Mobile’s network covers, 210 million of those people are covered by T-Mobile’s Ultra Capacity 5G. T-Mobile has plans to bring Ultra Capacity 5G to 260 million people this year and 300 million in 2023.
With the additional mid-band spectrum won in Auction 110 and the C-band won last year, T-Mobile will continue to expand its mid-band coverage area and its speeds in certain areas across the country.
