Opponents of a cell tower in Mequon, WI gained momentum after representatives from T-Mobile said they were no longer interested in renting space on the tower, reports gmtoday.com.
State Rep. Jim Ott met with three representatives from T-Mobile at his office in the state capital who confirmed they were no longer interested in installing equipment on the 195-foot structure. But he noted this does not mean the cell tower application is dead.
“This does not mean there is not going to be a tower,” Ott told gmtoday.com. “The tower is still in the works, but I think what we heard yesterday is good news.”
Due to a provision rolled into the 2013 state budget, city governments have little power to regulate where cell towers are placed.
The Meqon Planning Commission did, however, unanimously approve a rule that would require structures to be setback at least their height. Based on that rule, the Common Council denied the cell tower request.
Cellusite, representing T-Mobile, appealed that decision to the Board of Appeals. The Board was supposed to meet on March 9 at the request of Cellusite. Ott said he believes Cellusite may be looking for another carrier to rent space on the structure or they are reconsidering whether or not to move forward on the project.
