Corsicana, TX has a cell tower proposal on the docket but has chosen to delay discussing it, reports the Corsicana Daily Sun. AT&T has made a request to place a cell tower in town at 1506 S. 7th Street in Corsicana. A web search suggests that the site is on property currently occupied by Smith Ag Service, farm equipment repair.
While the location appears to be non-residential, nearby neighbors contacted the Corsicana City Council with their concerns relating to possible health risks and noise. An AT&T representative who attended the meeting read from an American Cancer Society report reminding listeners that there are no proven health risks emanating from cell towers. Safety levels were noted as being equivalent to exposure from a household appliance.
As for intrusive noise, the AT&T rep noted that the cell tower would be powered by a battery, which would be silent. If the battery were to run out of juice, after 8 hours, a generator would kick on, confirmed AT&T. However, the sound output from the generator was compared to the sound of a lawnmower, not an industrial behemoth.
“Hopefully the neighbors can come to an agreement with the property owner of the proposed tower site, about its placement,” said Councilman Jeff Smith, who motioned to table the issue until a later date.
