Tower is Built on PGA Property But Activation Takes a Mulligan

UPDATE It is not unusual for the prospect of a new tower in the neighborhood to get the residents teed off. As previously reported by Inside Towers, adjoining properties have pitted the PGA against the Bolles Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus in Florida.  However, WJXT-TV is reporting that although the PGA tower has been built, its activation is on temporary hold.

Concerned parents worry that their children may be endangered by the proximity of the new tower. There is an older tower on the property that has been in use for years. The older tower does not appear to be a source of contention and it will remain in operation while the newly constructed tower sits idle.

The PGA announced the new tower will remain on standby for the 2019-2020 school year. Over 600 parents have petitioned to have the tower removed. “Let’s not put these towers next to schools where the kids are playing outside and they’re going to be there all day and they’re going to be exposed,” said parent Ehsan Shirazi.

Parents have argued that if a tower must exist, it should be at least 1,500 feet away from school property. The St. John’s County attorney, reminded parents that the wishes of the federal government regarding tower placement carry more weight than the wishes of local jurisdictions.
