Verizon recently announced an expansion in its relationship with small cell provider SpiderCloud, which will allow the carrier to test SpiderCloud’s new LTE-U small cell technology.

LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) is a new 4G technology that carriers, like Verizon, are using in an attempt to expand wireless coverage. LTE-U allows the carrier to aggregate the extra capacity with existing and licensed 4G airwaves.

During this trial period, which will begin in the third quarter of 2016, Verizon will be testing SpiderCloud’s LTE-U Enterprise Radio Access Network product. This small cell radio, which is designed for operation in large venues, uses both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

Verizon has been especially active in its deployment of 4G technology, already announcing it plans to deploy LTE-U technology in 2016.

SpiderCloud, a company based in San Jose, CA, has become the leader among small cell-focused vendors in the radio access network sector. In late 2015, after a $15.2 million round of investing, the company has raised more than $130 million.
