The Town Council of Fort Erie, Ontario gave its approval for an agreement with the municipality and Wind Mobile to build a new telecommunications tower in Ridgeway at a hearing on Monday, December 7. SBA Canada ULC provided consultation on the municipal process, and locating available sites. It will make the final submission to Industry Canada.
The site designated for the telecommunications tower currently holds a water tower, which is expected to be torn down in 2017 by Niagara Region. At this time, the water tower holds several antennas from other cellular companies. According to Bullet News, Fort Erie’s director of community planning and development, Rick Brady, said it is possible that after it is replaced, multiple providers will co-locate on the new tower.
So far, residents have been pleased with the efforts to improve cell service in the surrounding area. Brady said, “Cell coverage in this area hasn’t been very good – they’re hoping that will improve.”
Once the tower is finished with construction, it will be one of six communications towers located on town property. The fifth one, to be used for emergency services, is currently being raised.
