China had deployed nearly 2.3 million 5G base stations nationwide at the end of 2022, according to state news agency Xinhua. A number of them are finding their way to the rural areas along the disputed border with India, which is causing some consternation.
China’s deployment of 5G on towers on the border with India may be causing interference with the communications of military troops, according to Arunachal Observer, an Indian publication. The interference would be the latest point of friction along the 2,167-mile border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC), between India and China that is not clearly demarcated and subject to disputes over territories in several areas.
“A strange booming sound is heard in communication equipment due to the 5G waves, which China is using on its side of LAC. This had left Indian authorities concerned in scrambling to find a solution to deal with the pressing problem,” a source told the publication.
To avoid the interference, India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation is discussing plans to launch a K-band satellite to be used for Indian armed forces and radio astronomy.
