With security concerns about technological spyware making digital encroachment more difficult, Florida man Ping Li went low-tech, gathering information for the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The West Orlando News reports that Li, who immigrated from China over ten years ago, has apparently been working for the Chinese government’s Ministry of State Security collecting and sharing information about individuals and organizations in which the PRC has an interest. For example, Li, who worked for an unnamed telecommunications provider in the U.S., reportedly supplied the PRC with insider knowledge about both business expansion plans and the company’s responses to hacking efforts.

Li was also asked to research personal addresses and cyber security training procedures, and to keep an eye on a religious organization that is outlawed in China. A federal court will determine whether or not Li will earn the maximum penalty of five years in prison.
